| History:
|
In 1807, Douglas Dummet, an immigrant from Barbados, arrived in Cocoa Beach and helped develop the citrus industry. Then came the Seminole Wars, freezes, and devastating hurricanes all, of which, combined to destroy the Dummet groves. In 1894 the railroad was extended to Lake Worth, which opened up a whole new opportunity for businesses and travelers. In 1918 Cocoa Beach was connected to the mainland when a series of wooden bridges were erected over the Banana River, giving access to many travelers. Today, the area of Cocoa Beach grows citrus fruits, Indian River Oranges, and grapefruits which are shipped worldwide. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
