History:

Henry Flagler arrived in Palm Beach County - the Palm Beaches - in 1893. Flagler had a vision to turn Palm Beach into the most famous, well-known resort in the world. On November 5, 1894, under Flagler's guidance, the residents of the little town voted to incorporate as the city of West Palm Beach. The city soon became a frontier town containing storefronts and saloons, and became as notorious as any town in the wild west. The bible wielding, anti-alcohol crusader, Carrie Nation, arrived in 1904. Nation had little effect on the town's raucous personality, but churches began springing up at that time. In 1926 and 1928 killer hurricanes almost destroyed the town, and in 1929 property value dropped by more than half. The city fought back, but it took years. WWII brought military dollars to the area, and an influx of veterans began moving into the area in 1950. The first television station was opened in 1953, and a dozen more followed a couple of years later. The town has lived through a boom, a bust, a war that took place right off it's shores, another boom and a recession. This is a town that's too tough to die.
